FAQS For Roofing Tiles

Do roof tiles offer thermal insulation?

Yes. Concrete and terracotta are poor conductors of heat and cold. As a result roof tiles provide improved insulation when compared to some other roofing materials.

The colour of the roof will also affect its relevant thermal insulation performance. Light coloured roofs reflect heat and dark colours absorb heat, this should be considered when selecting the roof tile for your home.

Is water collected off a concrete or terracotta roof safe to drink?

Yes. Water collected off a tiled roof is as safe to drink as water collected off most other roofing materials. The raw materials used to manufacture modern roof tiles are non-toxic and even when oxidised do not present a health risk. What is sarking?

Sarking is a flexible membrane that is installed under the tile battens when the roof is fitted. Sarking has many benefits including thermal insulation, prevention of wind driven rain penetrating roof spaces and reduction of dust in the roof spaces.

We recommend the use of a good quality sarking regardless of pitch and wind category rating. For more information on sarking go to the Roof Sarking page on this site.

What is Flexible Pointing?

Flexible Pointing is a flexible and extremely durable coating that is applied to the bedding used to fix ridge fittings to the roof. Because it is flexible it does not crack with the natural expansion and contraction of the roof.

This pointing system reduces the need for pointing maintenance significantly. It is available in a wide range of colours that allow it to be matched to all standard tile colours.

Do you offer warranties on installation and products you supply?

Yes. Bristile Roofing is the only roof tile company to offer a written 10 Year Installation Warranty. Our concrete tiles have a 50 Year Product Warranty and our terracotta products are covered by our famous Colour For Life Warranty.

How long should a tile roof last? Due to the very durable nature of terracotta and concrete roof tiles and advancements in manufacturing and installation methods, a modern roof tile roof should have an effective life of at least 50 years.
What ongoing maintenance requirements do roof tiles have? With the development of Flexible Pointing and the purpose made barge tile which seals the gable ends of roofs, roof maintenance has been reduced to a minimum. We recommend a periodic check of the roof for broken tiles or flashing deterioration. Many companies offer roof inspection and restoration services, and are qualified to report on your roof and advise what work should be done.
